Superintendent
Dr. Melissa Poloncic, Superintendent of DC West Community Schools
Dr. Melissa Poloncic enters her eighth year as Douglas County West Community Schools Superintendent. She has spent her career in public education for 29 years as a former teacher, school principal, and educational consultant.
As superintendent of schools, she oversees and provides leadership to more than 150 employees, whom she believes are truly the “heart and soul” of the school district. One of her most important responsibilities involves providing leadership in instruction, school improvement, fiscal and building operations, and being a representative of the school district in the Learning Community of the metro area. Melissa Poloncic believes in public education, particularly in the "big school opportunities" and "small school advantages" that DC West provides. She has proudly taught and mentored many educators and administrators, helping them become more effective advocates for students.
A native of Nebraska, Dr. Poloncic obtained her undergraduate degree from the University of Nebraska at Kearney, a Masters degree from the University of Nebraska at Kearney, a Certification of Specialization in Educational Administration from the University of Nebraska at Lincoln, and her Educational Doctorate in Educational Administration from the University of Nebraska at Lincoln.
Melissa and her husband, Derek, reside in Valley and have three children, a son, and two daughters. Her favorite activities outside of work include boating, being outdoors, and enjoying time with her family and friends.
I am the proud Superintendent of DC West Community Schools where our mission is to "create passionate learners". Because all children learn differently, we work hard to meet ALL student's needs in a positive, safe environment that is supported by the community. Our smaller school provides an abundance of opportunities for one on one interaction with staff and students, enabling each student to reach their maximum potential. Opportunities to participate in a variety of activities are plentiful, encouraging students to try new things and be a part of a sports team, speech team or other clubs. If you are looking for a school that offers this kind of experience, come and check us out! ~Melissa
