Dr. Melissa Poloncic, Superintendent of DC West Community Schools
Melissa Poloncic became Douglas County West Community Schools Superintendent July 1, in 2014. Her appointment came after working in public education more than 20 years as a teacher, school principal, and educational consultant. Most recently, she was a Principal in Millard Public Schools.
As superintendent of schools, she oversees and provides leadership to more than 120 employees, whom she believes are truly the “heart and soul” of the school district. One of her most important responsibilities involves providing leadership in instruction, school improvement, fiscal and building operations, and being a representative of the school district in the Learning Community of the metro area. Melissa Poloncic believes in public education, particularly in the "big school opportunities" and "small school advantages" that DC West provides. She has proudly taught and mentored many educators and administrators, helping them become more effective advocates for students.
A native of Nebraska, Dr. Poloncic obtained her undergraduate degree from the University of Nebraska at Kearney, a Masters degree from the University of Nebraska at Kearney, and a Certification of Specialization in Educational Administration from the University of Nebraska at Lincoln, and her Educational Doctorate in Educational Administration from the University of Nebraska at Lincoln.
Melissa and her husband, Derek, reside in Valley and have three children, a son and two daughters. Her favorite activities outside of work include boating, going to the gym, and enjoying time with her family and friends.
I am the proud Superintendent of DC West Community Schools where our goal is to "create passionate learners". Because all children learn differently, we work hard to meet ALL students needs in a positive, safe environment that is supported by the community. Our smaller school provides an abundance of opportunities for one on one interaction with staff and students, enabling each student to reach their maximum potential, whatever that may be. Opportunities to participate in a variety of activities are plentiful, encouraging students to try new things and be a part of a sports team, speech team or other club. If you are looking for a school that offers this kind of experience, come and check us out. See why we feel Douglas County West Community Schools are the best kept secret in Western Douglas County! ~Melissa
