Mike Gitt

Mike Gitt - Valley High School – Class of 1998

Athletic Hall of Fame Induction 2020

Mike Gitt was a standout athlete for the Valley Terriers in the late 1990s. He earned four varsity letters in basketball, three in football, and one in golf during his illustrious high school career. Former Valley Head Basketball Coach, Rick Ahrens stated, “Mike Gitt is an excellent choice to be inducted into the DC West Sports Hall of Fame. He was a fantastic basketball player for Valley during his high school career. He was a gifted post player, but could also step out and shoot the ball from the perimeter. This made him a very tough matchup for the opposing team. His basketball skills were outstanding, but he was an even better person. Mike was a great team leader and great teammate which directly led to our team’s success.”

In football, Mike was a game-breaking receiver who led the conference in receiving and was named Honorable Mention All-State his senior year. However, his star shined the brightest on the basketball court. He was named First Team Nebraska Capital Conference his junior and senior seasons and Second Team All-State by the Omaha World Herald and Lincoln Journal Star following his senior year. He held Valley High School basketball records for career points (1,417), career rebounds (831), career field goals (590), and field goal percentage (60%). In the 1998 Capital Conference semi-final game, Mike scored a career-high 41 points against the Arlington Eagles. Mike’s teammates described him as a low-key, hard-working player who pushed everyone to become better together on and off the basketball court. He was described as a great teammate who led through his actions.

After high school, Mike went on to play basketball and earn a bachelor's Degree in Construction Management from the University of Nebraska at Kearney.  During his UNK Loper career, his team won the Rocky Mountain Conference in both 2002 and 2003 and Mike was named Honorable Mention All-Conference after his senior year. Mike considers his greatest sports accomplishments as the ongoing friendships he made while in high school and college and being a member of the greatest UNK team in history, posting a 30-3 record in 2003.

After college, Mike went on to start his own remodeling and construction company which has been in operation for the last 14 years in the Omaha Area. He is the father of five children: Gina (21), Brendan (16), twins Emerson and Aiden (13), and Ava (9). Please welcome back to Valley and Douglas County West High School, Hall of Famer, Mike Gitt!
