Mason Grinvalds

Mason Grinvalds – DC West High School – Class of 2015

Athletic Hall of Fame Induction 2021

Mason Grinvalds was a multi-event track star during his Douglas County West career. He earned four letters in track and cross-country and two in basketball. When asked to comment on his experience coaching Mason, Track Coach Gib Hall said, “Mason is a shining example of determination. He went from being an average underclassman to among the best in the state in the triple jump and 400 meters, and a state champion in the 800 meters. I will always remember Mason as the smartest kid in his class, the hardest worker on the team, and the most dedicated athlete to offseason strength and speed training. It was truly a privilege to coach Mason for four years. “

Mason had a senior track season for the ages. It was the culmination of what he had worked so hard to achieve. At the famous Burke High School Oval his senior year, Mason placed 9th in the triple jump, 5th in the 400 meters, and 1st in the 800 meter run. Mason described his experience with the following words, “I worked very hard, had fun, and loved what I was doing.” Assistant track coach Ron Michael stated, “Mason was an unusual athlete with an uncanny ability to turn it on when the stakes were the highest. He went out fast at the state meet in the 800 meters and just wore the competition down and held on at the end for the championship. It was truly a sight to see. He is very deserving of being the first DC West Athlete inducted into the Athletic Hall of Fame.”

After high school, Mason went on to the University of Nebraska at Omaha and earned a Bachelors Degree in Mathematics. He is currently working as an underwriting assistant at the National Indemnity Company in Omaha.  Please welcome Mason Grinvalds, the first Douglas County West Athlete to the Athletic Hall of Fame!
